Finalists in the prestigious 2014 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards were announced tonight at a function attended by over 160 tourism operators at the Novotel Langley Perth.

Tourism Council WA Evan Hall CEO said “the Awards highlight the extraordinary experiences that Western Australian tourism has to offer.”

International tourists scoot back to WA

Latest data released today by Tourism Research Australia shows that international tourism to Western Australia is up by 6.7% to 796,300 visitors over the last twelve months. The International Visitor Survey showed the increase was driven by a 7.2% rise in leisure tourism.

“International visitors to WA are up 6.7%” said Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall.

“Over 796,000 international visitors now spend $2.2 billion dollars in WA each year” said Mr Hall

WA Visitor Centre network must be rebuilt

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has called for strong local and state government support for Visitor Centres following the release of a report into the sustainability of WA’s visitor centre network.

The report entitled “The future of visitor centres in WA” was commissioned by Tourism WA and shows Visitor Centres are under strain despite their strong contribution to regional economies.

Visitor Centres across WA will be gathering in Kalgoorlie next week to consider the report.

Air services must be secured

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has expressed concern with the ongoing viability of regional aviation services following a shake-up of competition and services in regional towns like Exmouth, Esperance and Albany.

Virgin has today announced their intention to reduce aviation services to Albany and Esperance

“Aviation services for non-mining towns are under strain” said Mr Hall.

“We are seeing less competition and reduced number of flights” said Mr Hall.

Stunning design will make stadium a tourism icon

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has applauded the stunning design of the new Perth Stadium and predicts the stadium will become a major tourism attraction and icon for Western Australia.

50,000 sports spectators already visit WA each year, adding more than $60 million to the state economy. Sporting events are a major tourism driver and the industry believes the new Perth stadium will significantly increase international and interstate tourism to WA.

Tourism boost creates 2,000 jobs

9 July 2014

Tourism Council WA estimates the tourism industry has created over 2,000 jobs following a major boost in domestic tourism.

The National Visitor Survey released today by Tourism Research Australia shows that domestic overnight visitors increased by 9.1% for the year ending March 2014. These visitors spent an additional $451 million in the state economy and creating new jobs across the state. Tourism Council WA estimates that tourism now creates 93,000 jobs in WA.

Tourism welcomes coastal revitalisation

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has welcomed today’s announcement of a new Coastal Towns and Settlements Cabinet Subcommittee.

“WA’s coast-line is one of our great natural treasures and we welcome new tourism experiences that will engage locals and tourists” said Mr Hall.

“Destinations like Coral Bay and Esperance are an important part of the WA brand and must be protected and revitalised as extraordinary experiences” said Mr Hall.

National Park investment will boost tourism

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has welcomed the extensive upgrades of Western Australia’s National Parks camping grounds and facilities announced by the State Government today.

“Last year WA attracted over 1.8 million holiday tourists into our National Parks across regional WA, but we can significantly increase this with new upgrades and developments” said Mr Hall.  

“This Royalties for Regions investment will bring visitors, dollars and jobs back to regional tourism towns” said Mr Hall.

A New Museum for Destination Perth

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has endorsed today’s announcement that the State Government has started funding for the New Museum WA. Museum WA will be a major new attraction drawing visitors to Destination Perth.

“The tourism industry expects the new Museum WA to attract 200,000 more visitors each year including over 100,000 international and interstate visitors who will spend $11 million per day in Perth” said Mr Hall.
