Tourism supports National Park election announcement

13 February 2013

Premier makes an election promise to invest $20 million in tourism facilities in Western Australian National Parks. An increase in national park funding was a key ask in the Tourism Council WA State Election Proposals.

“The tourism industry welcomes the $20 million investment in national park accommodation and visitor facilities’’ said Mr Hall.

“National Parks are our state’s tourism calling card with 1.8 million visitors participating in nature-based tourism in WA every year” said Mr Hall.

“Nature-based tourists stay 25.8 million nights in WA and spend $2.5 billion across WA’s tourism regions” said Mr Hall.

“Investing in national parks supports regional tourism economies as well as the environment.”

The tourism industry has been working with the current Department of Environment & Conservation to lift standards of environmental protection and visitor services.  The industry is keen to ensure this partnership approach is with a new Western Australian Parks Authority, rather than heavy handed regulation.

“We support a parks authority with a focus on sustainable tourism” said Mr Hall.

“Tour operators and park rangers are on the frontline in promoting and protecting our national parks and we are keen to work closely with the new parks authority.” said Mr Hall.

“Tourism Council WA will closely examine the details on the new park authority and regulatory department” said Mr Hall.
