ALP business event policy to boost jobs
7 March 2016
Tourism Council WA has welcomed the announcement that a WA Labor government would invest $5 million per annum in Perth Convention Bureau.
TCWA CEO Evan Hall said PCB was a valuable contributor to the WA economy, bringing in $30 for every $1 invested by the State government – outperforming similar bureaux in other States.
“PCB promotes Western Australia both nationally and internationally as a destination for conventions and exhibitions, which bring high-yielding business event delegates to Western Australia,” Mr Hall said.
“Tourism Council WA estimates the policy announced by WA Labor would create more than 340 new jobs in WA and bring in $155 million in business delegate expenditure.”
In the 2015 State Budget, funding for Perth Convention Bureau was slashed over the forward estimates.
“As it currently stands, continuation of the current funding model for PCB will result in a decline in the number of high-yield business travellers to WA, resulting in fewer jobs and a lower economic outcome,” Mr Hall said.
“With the growth in international visitors to Western Australia lagging the rest of the nation, it is increasingly important to invest in opportunities to bring visitors to our State, such as attracting international conferences, conventions and exhibitions.”
