State of Origin A Tourism Coup
15 July 2016
Tourism Council WA has applauded the State Government for securing Perth Stadium as the venue for the second 2019 State of Origin match, to be held on a weekend in June.
The Council estimates the event will attract at least 20,000 visitors who will spend $15 million in WA, creating more than 160 full time equivalent jobs across the State.
“Securing the State of Origin is an absolute coup for Western Australia,” said Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall.
“We can expect at least 20,000 diehard league fans to make their way from New South Wales and Queensland for the match - that’s about the same number of visitors we get from Japan, Ireland or India each year.
“In tourism terms, hosting the State of Origin is like discovering a whole new country of people who want to visit you.”
These visitors will spend at least $15 million in WA’s shops, hotels, bars, restaurants, taxis, venues and attractions.
“We estimate the $15 million boost to the WA economy will create the equivalent of more than 160 jobs across Western Australia,” Mr Hall said.
“With 20,000 visitors, both the Stadium and the city will be at capacity - it will be a great time to be in Perth.”
Weekend Match a Tourism Boost
Mr Hall said moving the Origin match from the traditional Wednesday night to the weekend was a stroke of genius by the NRL and State Government.
“Timing the match for the weekend will encourage interstate fans to travel to Perth and stay longer in WA,” he said.
“Hotel occupancy is traditionally low in Perth on winter weekends and this will give us the hotel rooms we need to accommodate the estimated 20,000 visitors travelling to the west coast for the match.
“Winter is also a great time for fans to travel on to regional WA for whale watching on the coast, wine and cosy B&Bs in the south or escaping the cold in Broome and the Kimberley.”
The tourism industry will develop tour packages to get State of Origin fans to stay in Perth and travel on to regional destinations. Packages will include flights, accommodation, game tickets and transport, for example:
- Game, Perth (3 nights) and return flights from Sydney from $595 pp;
- Game, Perth (3 nights), Margaret River (3 nights), car rental (7 days) & return flights ex Sydney from $945pp;
