Tourism welcomes appointment of new Minister to take charge of government’s funding promise

2 August 2013

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has welcomed the appointment of Liza Harvey as Tourism Minister. The Minister is responsible for a $7.5 Billion dollar industry which employs 90,000 people across Western Australia. The Minister will be responsible for delivering the government’s election promise of $24 million over 4 years ($6 million p.a.) to market WA as a tourist destination.

“We are delighted to be working with a senior and respected member of cabinet” said Mr Hall.

“The Ministers first job will be to deliver the $6 million additional funding in this year’s budget, so we can win back the leisure tourists that regional WA relies on” said Mr Hall.

“The $6 million marketing promise will deliver about $120 million in tourist spending across WA, creating about 2,000 jobs” said Mr Hall.

“With hotel rates and the Australian dollar falling, the now is the time to invest in leisure tourism to make up for the decline in mining” said Mr Hall.

“Every dollar the government invest in marketing, the industry will match” said Mr Hall.

“We’ve been in ‘no man’s land’ due to the advertising freeze and change of Minister. With a new Minister we are now looking for certainty that the government will deliver its election promise” said Mr Hall.

Tourism Council WA is looking forward to meeting with the Premier and Minister Harvey as soon as possible to discuss the tourism recovery in WA.
