New Westin Hotel a major investment in WA Tourism

23 December 2013

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has warmly welcomed the announcement that a new 350 room five star Westin hotel will be developed at the FESA House site in Perth by BGC.

“This new 350 room hotel represents a significant investment in Western Australia’s growing tourism industry” said Mr Hall.

“Perth still has one of the highest hotel occupancy rates in the world” said Mr Hall “and this new hotel will add much needed rooms for business and leisure tourists” said Mr Hall.

“The new hotel will host at least 150,000 additional overnight visitors who will spend at least $85 million in WA each year” said Mr Hall.

The hotels will be developed by BGC and operated by the Starwood Group under the Westin brand.

“Westin is a leading international 5 star brand and a great addition to Perth’s hotel offering” said Mr Hall

“The Starwood Group operates the Westin, Sheraton and W Hotel chains and has a strong loyalty program that will attract luxury travellers to Perth” said Mr Hall.

The Westin Hotel development is a result of the Hotel Incentive Policy advocated by Tourism Council WA and adopted by the State Government in late 2011. Under the policy the FESA house crown land site was released for mixed use development with a mandated hotel component.

“Without the State Government’s incentive policy this new Westin Hotel wouldn’t even be on the drawing board” said Mr Hall

“This is good state policy, well delivered, starting to get results” said Mr Hall.

“The planned hotel room developments at Crown, Elizabeth Quay and the new Westin Hotel will go a long way to meeting Perth’s hotel needs” said Mr Hall.

“We need 1,900 new hotel rooms by 2020” said Mr Hall “after that incentives should taper off so we do not flood the market with an oversupply of rooms”.
