Learn to be a Tour Guide from the experts!  This one-day course developed by award-winning touring & training organisation Global Gypsies conveys the basic principles of guiding in a fun and supportive environment.  It is ideal for new or aspiring guides, or existing guides wanting to brush up their skills, and is suitable for full-time, part-time, casual or volunteer guides in a range of diversified working environments.

Through a combination of anecdotes, interactive workshops, role plays and presentations, your two professional instructors, Jeremy Perks and Jan Barrie, will cover such topics as:

  • Logistics of running a tour
  • Developing & delivering quality narrative
  • How to engage your audience
  • Duty of care
  • Risk management
  • Starting your own small touring business
  • The importance of marketing
  • Designing & pricing a tour
  • What it takes to be a tour guide, and more!

Participants will receive a workbook and Certificate of Completion.

Global Gypsies has been running successful tours in Australia and overseas since 1997 and has been training tour guides for over a decade. The company also recently published an educational book that is selling well right round the country entitled “How to Be an Award-Winning Tour Guide”.

Tourism Council WA is continually assessing activities including workshops, which will proceed at this time. We are working with venues to ensure appropriate hygiene and social distancing measures are in place. 

About the Trainers -

Jeremy Perks

Jeremy is a Director and co-founder of leading touring and training company, Global Gypsies. He is a professional, Eco-certified & GOA Accredited Tour Guide, qualified mechanic and trainer in four-wheel driving, towing and Tour Guiding. He has a certificate in remote area first aid, a Certificate IV in Workplace Training & Assessment and is an honorary DBCA Ranger. As an Officer in the South African Defence Force, Jeremy learned bush survival and leadership skills and has worked as a professional guide in both Africa and Australia. He has served on a number of tourism-related Boards and Committees and is a former FACET Golden Guide of the Year.  He is co-author of “How to Be an Award-Winning Tour Guide”.

Jan Barrie

Jan is the General Manager and co-founder of Global Gypsies. With a background in management, public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism, hospitality, tourism and travel writing, she has traveled extensively and worked in the USA, UK, Australia and East Africa. She has served on a number of tourism-related Boards and Committees and is co-author of “How to Be an Award-Winning Tour Guide”. Jan has been integral in developing & delivering the tour guide course and is responsible for its coordination, administration & marketing.
