Tourism Spending Growth Generates 8,000 Jobs

Growth in tourism spending from international and interstate visitors generated an estimated 8,000 full-time jobs in Western Australia in 2019.

“Over the past 12 months, WA tourism has recovered from the lows of 2017 and 2018, and is growing jobs once more,” Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said.

“Tourism Council WA estimates that increased visitor spending created an additional 8,000 full-time jobs in 2019.”

Western Australians are encouraged to enjoy their holidays with genuine licensed tourism operators amid a rise in reports of unlicensed rogue operators which could pose a risk to customer safety.

Tourism Council WA has received reports from across the tourism industry of an increase in the number of rogue businesses operating tours without transport or national park licences.

Holiday in WA to support jobs, communities

A new campaign will encourage Western Australians to explore their own State on their next holiday, supporting local jobs and communities.

The Holiday in WA campaign, featuring 14 real tourism operators from across the State, will begin appearing on television and digital channels from today.

Western Australians travelling overnight in WA spend $4.4 billion in the local economy, creating approximately 57,000 jobs, particularly in regional towns.

Red tape reform to bolster catch-and-cook tourism

Tourism Council WA has welcomed reforms to fishing regulations which will facilitate a growth in catch-and-cook tourism in Western Australia. 

The changes mean holidaymakers can have their recreationally caught fish cooked by a chef in their accommodation’s restaurant or kitchen, which was not previously possible. 

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said the small reform was expected to increase visitation to coastal Western Australia by visitors seeking a genuine catch-and-cook experience.

Hero lobster to attract $110m more in tourist spend

A trial of changes to rock lobster availability for tourism operators is expected to inject $110 million in additional visitor expenditure into the WA economy.

The changes will allow increased boat limits of rock lobster for selected charter operators, and will mean tour operators can store lobsters on vessels to tend to pots prior to tours, guaranteeing a catch-and-cook experience for visitors.
