Sky wars to benefit WA tourism

Tourism Council WA anticipates fierce competition on WA regional routes following today’s announcement that Virgin will acquire the regional airline Skywest and Tiger Airways. Tourism Council WA believes the takeover is a sign of increased rivalry between Virgin and Qantas in WA.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said “greater competition between Qantas and Virgin will keep a lid on WA aviation prices and attract more visitors to regional towns in WA.”

Funds available to help innovate and improve WA tourism industry

Tourism Council WA welcomes the announcement of the $48.5 million Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund (TIRF) which will assist tourism businesses in WA to increase the quality and range of visitor experiences.

Businesses can apply for grants from $50,000 to $250,000 to support their investment in tourism industry related accommodation, infrastructure, experiences and facilities.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said “this new fund comes from strong advocacy from the tourism industry during the last Federal Budget.”

25% federal tax hit on regional tourism

22 October 2012

A 25% increase in visa fees is expected to be announced in the Treasurers mini-budget today. The visa fee increase comes on top of a recent 17% tax increase on international visitors.

The latest tax hit includes the “Backpacker” Working Holiday Visa rising by 25% from $280 to $350. Backpackers are critical to WA regional towns as they travel widely across the state and stay a long time in regional areas.

Perth Education City (PEC) has been awarded the 2012 Best Practice/Innovation Award for Excellence in International Education by the International Education Association of Australia for its recent Science Roadshow to Vietnam.

Tourism industry wins $7.9 million marketing boost

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has welcomed the $7.9 million marketing boost announced by the State Government today. The announcement follows tourism industry calls for a new marketing campaign to promote WA into Sydney and Melbourne.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said “Interstate tourism has slumped in recent years and this new marketing campaign is just what we need to get back in the game.”

Finalists in the 2012 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards were announced tonight at an event at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle.

Now entering their 40th year, the prestigious awards recognise tourism excellence and reflect the passion and professionalism of tourism operators in Western Australia.

Chinese tourism reaches $150 million in WA

Latest data released by Tourism Research Australia shows that Chinese visitors to WA spent $154 million after a spectacular 60.4% increase in annual expenditure by Chinese visitors.

The International Visitor Survey also shows that nearly 28,000 Chinese visitors travelled to Western Australia over the last 12 months, a 43.3% increase on the previous financial year. Overall international visitor numbers to WA increased by 2.5%. International business visitors were up 8.2% but international leisure tourists were down -5.6%.

Tourism business to represent WA in the Telstra Australian Business

Skydive Jurien Bay will represent Western Australia as a finalist for the Best Regional Business in the Telstra Australian Business Awards which will be held in Sydney this evening.

New Crown hotel a major boost for WA tourism

Tourism Council WA has welcomed today’s announcement of a new 500 room hotel at Burswood which will attract nearly 80,000 visitors annually.

Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall has described the new hotel as “the most significant tourism investment in over a decade.”

“This is a major step forward in addressing the critical hotel room shortage which has been holding back leisure tourism in regional areas across the State” said Mr Hall.

Marketing push into Europe on the wings of Qatar Airways

Tourism Council WA has welcomed the $1.2 million co-operative marketing agreement that was signed today by the West Australian State Government and Qatar Airways.

The joint marketing initiative will concentrate on increasing visitation to WA by traditional European markets especially focusing on the United Kingdom and Germany.

Tourism Council WA Chief Executive Officer Evan Hall said “it is great opportunity to promote WA to our traditional markets while also pursing new markets such as China.”
