Be Kind These School Holidays
28 September 2020
Tourism Council WA is encouraging Western Australians to be kind to tourism operators and their staff these school holidays, as businesses face challenges impacting their ability to operate at capacity.
Tourism businesses across WA are preparing to welcome visitors these school holidays while operating under capacity restraints and without the previous volume of working holiday makers who would usually pick up some of the load.
“It’s fantastic to see so many Western Australians embracing the opportunity to explore their own backyard,” Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said.
“Unfortunately, we’ve been receiving reports of customers expressing their frustrations with operators and staff in a less-than-kind way.
“We’re asking Western Australians to be considerate of the challenges facing these operators, and to be patient and kind as they travel throughout the State.”
Mr Hall said tourism operators were particularly impacted by the loss of backpackers, meaning many owner-operators had been working for months without a break.
“The seasonal workforce that backpackers provide are essential for local tourism businesses as they assist with peak period travel and vacancies within the workforce,” he said.
“As a result of a decline in the number of backpackers in WA, local tourism operators are having to restrict the number of bookings on tours or in accommodation, or are unable to deliver the usual high level of service visitors typically experience.
“The tourism industry is calling on the Federal Government for a 12-month visa extension for all remaining backpackers so they can continue to work in tourism businesses during the school holidays and beyond.”
Travellers were encouraged to book ahead for accommodation, tours and even restaurants to avoid missing out.
“The best way to support local operators is to book ahead directly with the business – that way the business can prepare to give you the best experience on your trip, and you won’t be left disappointed,” Mr Hall said.
