PCEC expansion needed to create 240 jobs

Tourism Council WA is calling on the State government to commit to an expansion of Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre to allow Perth to attract more high-yield business delegates.

A report released today by Tourism Council WA, Missing Pieces: PCEC Expansion, shows Perth has the nation’s oldest convention centre which has reached capacity and cannot host larger business events or two large events at the same time. The report shows expanding Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre would attract more than 22,000 new delegates spending an additional $34.8 million in Western Australia each year and create 240 jobs.

“While the State government recently announced an increase in the funding to Perth Convention Bureau, signally the government’s recognition of the importance of business events, Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre has reached capacity,” said Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall.

“For example, during LNG18 in April, a temporary marquee had to be constructed at a cost of $2 million to cater to more than 6,000 delegates and exhibitors.

“All other states have expanded their convention and exhibition centre capacity in the past ten years to accommodate the growing business events market and it is essential for the same to happen in WA to capture a greater share of the lucrative market.”

In previous years, Perth had insufficient hotel rooms to accommodate more business event delegates. However, a significant increase in hotel development means Perth can and should now host more business events and delegates.

“In the past four years, 512 hotel rooms have been built in Perth, and there are 1,888 rooms currently under construction,” Mr Hall said.

“An expanded PCEC hosting more large business events, a Perth Cable Car to attract more visitors and investment in events will fill these rooms.”
