Perth Stadium footy to drive regional tourism

AFL fans coming to Western Australia for matches at the new Perth Stadium will drive tourism dollars and jobs in regional areas, according to Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall.

TCWA today launched Perth Stadium: Economic Game Changer, a strategy to drive sports tourism dollars and jobs into regional WA. The strategy estimates the new Stadium will attract 38,000 new interstate footy fans each year, who will spend $45 million across WA.

“AFL matches at the new Perth Stadium will provide powerful motivators for people to travel interstate,” Mr Hall said.

“We must have 10,000 general admission seats at the new Stadium so we can sell tourism packages for AFL matches and post-game touring in regional WA.”

The tourism industry can develop low-cost packages to get tourists into Perth and out to regional destinations, including:

  • Footy, Perth and Margaret River from Sydney, five days from $757pp
  • Footy, Perth and Kalgoorlie from Adelaide, five days from $876pp
  • Footy, Perth and Ningaloo Reef from Melbourne, six days from $1225pp
  • Footy, Perth, Broome and the Kimberley from Melbourne, seven days from $1470pp

The AFL will attract visitors to Perth on winter weekends when hotel rates are low and some of the State’s best regional touring seasons are in full swing.

Mr Hall said research into sports tourism found 27 per cent of interstate AFL tourists stayed in Western Australia for three to four days around their chosen fixture, while 39 per cent stayed five days or more.

“All of this increased visitation translates to increased economic activity in regional areas and more jobs for the people who live there.”

Reserving seats at the Stadium for visitors will also mean people in the regions will have a greater opportunity to attend AFL matches if they do not have an AFL club membership.
